Data consent
Kiatu asks your permission before it uses each kind of data. You can say no, and you can change your mind at any time. This page lists every kind of data, why it is used, where it stays, and exactly how to switch it off. The full detail is in the Privacy Policy.
Our promises
- Kiatu never sells your data, and never uses health data for advertising or marketing.
- Saying no to something only turns off the feature that needs it.
- You can leave completely by deleting your account.
Every kind of data
Account (email)
Needed to have an account
- What it is
- Your email address, a password (stored only as a hash) and an optional display name.
- Why Kiatu uses it
- To sign you in, sync your data between devices, and send account emails (verification, welcome, password and security notices).
- Where it stays
- Your account.
- How to switch it off
- Delete your account: Settings › Account › Delete my account.
- What happens if you do
- Your account and everything in it is deleted. Without an account you cannot sign in or sync.
Runs and shoes you log
Needed for the core of the app
- What it is
- Runs (distance, time, date, terrain, effort, notes), your shoes and mileage, shoe memories, your own shoes and rotation choices.
- Why Kiatu uses it
- To count mileage per shoe, show your closet and history, and work out your estimates.
- Where it stays
- Your phone, and your account so a new phone keeps it.
- How to switch it off
- Delete any run or shoe in the app, or delete your account. Without signing in, data stays on the phone only.
- What happens if you do
- Deleted items are removed from your account too.
Live Run location (GPS)
Only while a Live Run is in progress
- What it is
- Your GPS position while you record a Live Run, saved as that run’s route.
- Why Kiatu uses it
- To measure distance and pace and draw your route, including with the screen locked.
- Where it stays
- Your phone, and your account with that run (route coordinates are synced with the run).
- How to switch it off
- Choose While Using, Always or Never in iPhone Settings › Kiatu › Location (Android: Settings › Apps › Kiatu › Permissions › Location). Turn off Precise Location if you prefer, but distance gets rougher.
- What happens if you do
- Live Run cannot track the route (or loses it when the screen locks). You can still log a run by typing the distance.
Apple Health (iPhone)
Optional; you pick each type in the iOS sheet
- What it is
- Only the categories you allow: runs, heart rate, sleep, steps, fitness, walking steadiness and more (the full list is in the Privacy Policy). Kiatu only reads, and never writes.
- Why Kiatu uses it
- To log runs, track shoe mileage, and power the Health tab, coach and recovery insights.
- Where it stays
- Your phone. Runs sync to your account like any run; run routes and heart-rate detail stay on the phone. Other health data goes to your account only if you turn on Back up to my Kiatu account.
- How to switch it off
- iPhone Settings › Health › Data Access & Devices › Kiatu (turn off any or all). The separate switch Back up to my Kiatu account on the Health tab is your explicit consent for cloud backup of health data. It is off by default; turning it off deletes the copy from our servers.
- What happens if you do
- Features that use those categories stop updating (for example sleep or recovery), and nothing is backed up to the cloud.
Strava
Optional; you connect it yourself
- What it is
- Runs, basic athlete identity and shoe (gear) data you authorise.
- Why Kiatu uses it
- To bring your Strava runs into Kiatu and match shoes.
- Where it stays
- Your phone and your account, with Strava’s rules applied (not used for any AI/ML; a Strava run cannot be shared as a picture).
- How to switch it off
- Settings › Strava › Disconnect. You can also remove Kiatu in your Strava settings.
- What happens if you do
- Runs imported from Strava are deleted from Kiatu (from your phone and account). Runs recorded elsewhere are kept. After removal on Strava’s website, deletion happens after 7 days.
Reminders and notifications
Optional
- What it is
- Coach reminders and run alerts, scheduled on your phone from your own running data.
- Why Kiatu uses it
- To nudge you about rest, shoes and new runs.
- Where it stays
- Your phone only. No push tokens are used and nothing is sent from a server.
- How to switch it off
- The reminder switches in the app’s Settings, or iPhone Settings › Notifications › Kiatu.
- What happens if you do
- Reminders stop. Everything else works as before.
Usage statistics
On by default; random ID, not linked to you
- What it is
- A fixed list of milestones (such as app opened, shoe added, Shoe Lab shown) with app version and platform, under a random ID made on your phone. No runs, routes, location, health data or anything you typed. Sent only while signed in.
- Why Kiatu uses it
- To learn which parts of the app work and where people get stuck.
- Where it stays
- Our database, with the random ID only (not your account or email).
- How to switch it off
- Settings › Share usage stats (switch off).
- What happens if you do
- Nothing more is sent. The app works the same.
Error reports
Part of usage statistics
- What it is
- If a screen hits an error: the error type, which screen, and a short technical message with emails, links, IDs and long numbers removed.
- Why Kiatu uses it
- To find and fix bugs.
- Where it stays
- Our database, with the same random ID.
- How to switch it off
- The same switch: Settings › Share usage stats.
- What happens if you do
- No error reports are sent, so a bug that only affects you is harder for us to notice.
Photos and camera
Not used today
- What it is
- A shoe-photo feature (identify a shoe from a picture) was built but is switched off in the current app. The app contains the camera and photo-library permission text, but no photo is taken, read or uploaded.
- Why Kiatu uses it
- Nothing at the moment. If the feature is ever turned on, it will ask first and this page will be updated.
- Where it stays
- Nowhere: Kiatu does not collect photos.
- How to switch it off
- Nothing to switch off. You can deny Camera and Photos in iPhone Settings › Kiatu.
- What happens if you do
- No change.
How your consent is recorded
When you create an account and agree to the Terms and Privacy Policy, the app saves a record in your account (the user_consents table). Each record holds: which version of the Terms and of the Privacy Policy you accepted, the date and time, and the platform (iOS, Android or web). It does not hold the text you read or anything about your runs or health. Records are kept per version, so accepting a newer version adds a new record beside the old one.
The database lets you add and read your own consent records but not edit or delete them, so the record stays reliable. It is deleted along with the rest of your account when you delete the account. Permissions you give on your phone (location, Apple Health, notifications) are held by iOS or Android, not by us. Your choices about usage statistics and health backup are kept as app settings, not in the consent table.
Withdraw all consent
Delete your account in the app: Settings › Account › Delete my account. Your account and data are deleted from our database, and the phone is cleared. Two things are outside Kiatu’s reach: Apple Health keeps your data on your phone (revoke access in iPhone Settings › Health › Data Access & Devices › Kiatu), and Strava keeps its own copy. Details are in Privacy §7. If you cannot sign in, email support@kiatu.run.
